After taking down Christmas decorations last week, we decided to move the couches to vacuum underneath and around them in all of the places that have been largely ignored for far too long. (OK, truth be told, I decided to move the couches…., and the loving hubby was enlisted for execution of said plan.) While the couches were moved from the places they have rested for the past 2 years or so, he had a stroke of inspiration and motivation to try a new arrangement. So we (OK, he) did some more shifting and pushing…and now our living room looks like this:

(It used to look like this:)

I was very pleased to see that the photo arrangement which was once centered between the couch and loveseat…

…could now be centered over the couch without having to move any nails:

I know a real designer would say that pushing all of the furniture up against the wall is a big no no…but I think we gained some square footage in doing so…from this:

…to this:

With the baby gate down, and this much floor space opened up, I am more inclined to move the table into the kitchen area and convert what is now dining room space into a play room.

We’ll see.

I am happy with the fact that you can see more height of the bamboo tree, which used to be hidden behind the couch. I am also happy that you can see less of the unpainted, unfinished ledge which has been waiting for a windowsill since we moved in (one of those intentions that has just not materialized).

With the rearrangement, the “winter mantle” (which I intended to leave up through the last snow of the season) didn’t really work for me.

I did, however, have a bowl of potpouri, a picture, a bird, and one of the decorative knobby things I used to make feet for the bathroom vanity…so I put them atop the fireplace instead. Instead of the kidney bean wreath I made last year (the green seemed out of place with so much red near by), I decided to hot glue our big yellow letter K (from last year’s spring mantle) to another twig wreath I uncovered which had lost most of its flowers.

I am enjoying the change.

What do you think?

It looks great! It really does look like a bigger space. I love to move furniture around. My husband is always complaining that he comes home to a new house each week! I am dying to try and re-arrange the downstairs, but I can’t think of anything without moving our super huge obnoxious TV. Grrrr. I will win, though. I will win.
